THE 25-YEAR BET ABOUT TECHNOLOGY

1) Who is Kevin Kelly

Kevin Kelly born in 1952 was a Writer and photographer. According to sources, he was a co-founder of Wired, an Award-winning Magazine, and co-chair of the Long Now Foundation, which champions long-term thinkers. An article called Who is Kevin Kelly says "Kevin is also a visual artist who has exhibited works in galleries throughout the world. His artwork often focuses on themes of artificial intelligence, robotics, and new technology. He is also the founder of the collaborative art project Cool Tools Lab which uses digital technologies to bring together international artists from around the world".

2) Who is Patrick Sale?

Kirkpatrick Sale is an author, who has written many books on political decentralismenvironmentalismluddism, and technology. According to the Schumacher Center," His development of this concept in his books, lectures, and regular radio broadcasts fueled the ever-growing interest in a local approach to the solving of growing political, economic, and environmental problems. he has strong viewpoints on the input of technology in society. He’s a heavy critic of technology and how it affects society and is not shy of forming a rebellion to get his point/ beliefs across.

 3) Describe the chief conflict between the two men

The conflict the two men had was with their opposing views on technology. Kelly is all for technology his viewpoints stand with technology having a positive impact on society whereas Sale is very critical of it. He believes technology is bad for not only society but for the environment as well. Kelly argues that technology allows for people to be more open and creative and bring broader ideas whereas Sales argues that technology only creates problems.

4. What was the bet they made?

Kelly bet Sale $1,000 that in the year 2020, they would not even be close to the disaster Sale had described from the use of technology.

5. How did the bet go in the three areas measured?

Economic collapse “Sale predicted flatly that the dollar and other accepted currencies would be worthless in 2020. Patrick points to the Dow at 30,000 and the success of new currencies such as Bitcoin. “Not much contest here,” Patrick writes. Round goes to Kelly.” Global environmental disaster “It’s hard to dispute that we are at least ‘close to’ global environmental disaster,” Patrick wrote in his final decision. This one is Sale’s.” Rice vs Poor “He calls this round a toss-up, with an edge to Sale.”

6. Do you agree with the verdict of the judge who settled the bet?

I see no issue with who was deemed the winner of the bet I feel like Kelly's viewpoint is the most logical especially living with technology today, it’s not as much of an issue and groundbreaking ordeal as Sale made it out to be.

7. What other areas SHOULD the bet have covered? If you were making a similar bet for the NEXT 25 years. what areas would you include for judgment?

I would make a more specific guideline being society, how does technology affect individuals one on one, does it affect humans more negatively mental health wise, does it cause more suicides? Or does it benefit society?

 8. What changes do you think the next 25 years will bring?

this is a broad question I can only imagine the changes the next 25 years will bring especially with the creation of AI being able to pretend to be someone you’re not and edit videos to make it seem like things are being said that aren’t, the next 25 years technology will only develop more.
